Lesson 1.4.5

Rotary Evaporators, Vacuum Pumps, Chillers, and Filtration

Estimated time: 60 minutes

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how a rotary evaporator works: rotating flask, heating bath, condenser, vacuum, collection flask
  • Know the relationship between bath temperature, vapor temperature, vacuum level, and evaporation rate
  • Select the right vacuum pump for each application: diaphragm (solvent-compatible, oil-free), rotary vane (deep vacuum, needs cold trap), scroll (clean, quiet, expensive)
  • Size chillers based on condenser and process cooling requirements
  • Know filtration equipment: Buchner funnels, filter plates, cartridge filters, and micron ratings
